Malachite has moved between mineral specimen, pigment, ornament, and court object. Its green bands form as copper minerals change near the earth's surface, creating rings and waves no painter could repeat. In Chinese decorative arts and European princely interiors alike, it was valued because colour and pattern arrived already composed by nature.
